St. Mary’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Regional Health Center are again sponsoring a Cemetery Service for the Unborn. This ceremony is intended to bring comfort to parents and families who have suffered the loss of a child. Weather permitting it will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mt. Vernon, IL. (the corner of 27th Street and Old Union Road) Saturday June 7th. In case of rain, the service will be moved to St. Mary’s Church in Mt. Vernon. The service will begin at 10:30 am with Father John Iffert officiating, and he has prepared a beautiful homily.
Jeff Stewart, Director of Pastoral Care for St. Mary’s Good Samaritan states, “The loss of a child can be very traumatic. We have hosted this ceremony for three years and it has helped to bring peace to many.”
According Sister Andrea Chudzik, Director of Mission at St. Mary’s Good Samaritan and SSM Health Care Regional Leader of Mission, Pastoral Care and Ethics, “Showing respect for all life is part of our core value”. Sister Chudzik encourages anyone who has experienced a loss to attend, “We have even had those in attendance who experienced a loss over thirty years prior”.
All are invited to attend and lend support as well as to pray as a community. If you know of anyone who might benefit from this service, please be kind enough to invite them. Light refreshments will follow the ceremony so those planning to attend are asked to please call 618-214-5339 in advance.
