Dr. H. Goff Thompson
In partnership with the SIU School of Medicine’s Center for Alzheimer Disease and Related Disorders, the purpose of the specialty clinic is to diagnose, evaluate and treat memory disorders, and to provide support services to the patient and family.
Services will be conducted in a team approach by Dr. H. Goff Thompson; Valerie Duff, MSW, LSW; and Belinda Etheridge, LCSW. Dr. Thompson is Board Certified in Geriatrics and has more than 45 years experience practicing medicine in the Mt. Vernon Community.
The Day of Your Evaluation
The Memory Clinic provides a comprehensive, multidisciplinary evaluation that typically lasts 2 hours. A Masters-level social worker completes the following state-approved cognitive screening tools with the patient:
- Mini Mental State Exam
- Clock Drawing Test
- Word Fluency Test
- Clinical Dementia Rating Scale
- Neuropsychiatric Inventory
- Geriatric Depression Scale
These results, along with lab work and a CT of the head, are reviewed by Dr. H. Goff Thompson, MD. Dr. Thompson discusses the results of the test with the patient and the family and provides a diagnosis. The patient and family receive an individualized care plan.
Reassessment and Assistance
The Memory Clinic provides follow-up examinations every six months as needed to track changes if a progressive disease, such as Alzheimer's, is diagnosed. Social workers are available to discuss changes in living conditions and social resources as the disease causes changes in the lives of the patient and the family.
